How to Improve Your Social Health
July is social wellness month! But what on earth is “social wellness?” Social wellness is defined as the relationships we have and how we interact within them.
Why
Human beings are social creatures meaning we crave relationships. Good relationships are one of the most important aspects of our lives that can positively impact our mental, physical and emotional wellness. The benefits of social wellness include, but are not limited to, an increase in self-esteem, being able to handle stress better, help relieve depression, and helps maximize your life experiences. Those who isolate themselves become a higher risk for illness and chronic disease.
How
Social wellness is a crucial part of self-care. There are several ways to achieve a balance of healthy social wellness in your life. Seeking out and maintaining positive relationships with healthy boundaries and consistently reciprocated communication is a huge factor in increasing your social wellness. Additionally, having a good work/life balance is necessary to maintaining your professional and personal relationships. When we are running on empty and stressed, our relationships are the first to suffer. This is where learning and implementing healthy communication and boundaries skills comes in handy.
Overall health includes your physical, social, spiritual, emotional, and mental wellbeing. Practicing social wellness will positively impact all those different areas and can lead to greater satisfaction in life.
